For car enthusiasts, Spa is most famous for its racetrack, widely considered the greatest racing circuit on earth. However, the small town in Belgium has a rich history. We take a look at what else it has to offer to petrol heads.
Despite its title, the Circuit of Spa Francorchamps is not actually located in Spa. Instead, it lives within the town of Stavelot – a 15 minute drive away.
Steeped in history
Not named by chance, Spa is Europe’s oldest health resort. The town has great history, being frequented as a watering place since as early as the 14th century thanks to several natural mineral springs believed to possess special health-giving properties.
By the 16th century, the town was an upper class resort and meeting place for European nobility and became world famous. Consequently, this fame led to the town’s name being used as a generic term for thermal baths in English and several other languages.
Today, visitors can still experience the benefits of Spa’s spring waters at the new building that houses Les Thermes de Spa built in 2005. High up with a panoramic view of the city, it was designed by a well-known Belgian architect. Its stunning exterior is made accessible by a quaint funicular from the base of the town.
Visitors can look forward to indoor and outdoor swimming pools, jacuzzi, Turkish baths and mud baths in addition to a vast range of spa treatments in one of the building’s 60 rooms.
A range of activities
Not just famous for its springs, it was also in Spa that the first modern casino - Casino de Spa - was born, which still resides today. With immaculate grounds, a grand exterior and high ceilings, it offers another option to Spa’s bustling nightlife of restaurants and bars.
Despite being a relatively small town, there are over 60 restaurants to choose from and a variety of bars to conclude your evening in.
For those keen to indulge their adventurous spirit, there are more options than just the racetrack. The airfield just outside of the town offers tandem skydiving experiences over the stunning, lush forests surrounding Spa.
